Abstract

Effect of GA₃ Urea, Superphosphate and Rallis tracel on the growth of teak seedlings in nursery and its cODsequent effect after planting the stumps of seedlings in the field was studied. The effect of GA in the nursery bed is positive and enhances the height growth, ischolar_main growth and vigor of the plan Is if applied alonwith the nutrients, the enhanced growth and vigor of treated sfedlings does not manifest itself in the performance of the stumps, prepared from the treated seedlings for planting in the field. The effect of GA₃, is temporary, and the enhanced growth and vigor of seedlings is suspended with the discontinu.tion of treatment. The performance of the stumps in the field conditions exhibit. Inferior quality and growth as compared to the untreated seedlings.

Abstract

The problem of poor seed setting in teak seed orchard at Mohghata Bhandara Forest Project Division (Maharashtra) was reported by the Managing Director, Forest Develepment Corporation of Maharashtra and Consenator, of Forests, Research and Education,Maharashtra Major insert pests which cause direct or indirect loss to the production of teak seed are, fruit borer and inflorescence feeder Pagyda salvalis, sap sucking bug, Leptocentrus vicarius and fruit borer, Dichocrocis punctiferills Defoliator, Hyblaea puera and skeletonizer, Eutectona machaerlis were noticed feeding on inflorescence in the absence of leaves, during present investigations. In the year 1980 various insecticides tested to control the insect pests were, dimeceron 0.05% nuvacron 0.05%; anthio 0.03%. endosulfan 0.25%, fenitrothion 0.25% and sevin 025%. along with hormonr alpha nophthyl acetic acid (planofix) 20 ppm. In the year 1981, only 2 insecticides i.e. nuvacron and endosulfan, which proved better in 1980 were sprayed. Different dosayes of nvacron i.e. 0.025% and 0.125% and endosulfan 0.125% and 0.0625% were tried so as to optimise the disc of application. Alpha nephthyl acetic acid (planofix) 40 Ppm was sprayrd alongwith the higher dose of the insecticides. The studies revealed that the best results as regards production and protection of inflorescence and fruits, can be obtaioned by spraying nuvacron 36 E (0.025%) and eodosolfan 35 EC (0.125%) water emulsion together with harmone, alpha nephthyl acetic ocid (NAA) 40 ppm.

Abstract

Rooting response in Dalbergia latifolia Roxb. branch cuttings by the application of different plant hormones was studied. The ischolar_maining potential was observed best by application of Indole acetic acid (IAA) 100 ppm, Indole butyriC acid (IBA) 100 ppm and napthylic acetic acid (NAA) 100 ppm could induced moderate (40%) ischolar_maining response, while in untreated control it was poor. The detailed results have been discussed.

The fused needle disease in, Pinus caribaea is described. This is the first published report of the disease from India. The affected plants developed needles showing wide range of deformation and excessive exudation of resin. However, the plants apparently looked healthy and did not appear to suffer damage of any significance.

Abstract

Spiked Zinger Lily, a perennial rhizomatous herb, belongs to family Zingiberaceae, commonly known as 'Kapur-kachari' widely available in moist, damp-shady evergreen forests and popular in traditional systems with several ethnobotanical notes. For identification of superior genotypes, a total of 34 accessions were collected from Indian Himalayan Region along with passport information. Rhizomes of all accessions were chopped, dried and subjected to Clevenger Hydro-distillation unit for essential oil extraction and observed 0.06-6.12% oil yield. In addition to this 1, 8 cineole (8.22 -58.15 %) was observed as a major constituent of the essential oils on Gas Chromatography (GC). Essential oil content and major chemical constituent 1, 8 cineole, both the parameters revealed an increasing trend along an altitudinal gradient of 1400-2875 m amsl.

Abstract

An ethno-botanical survey was carried out in Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts of North Bengal region of West Bengal, India during the period of October 31 - November 8, 2012. The present survey has revealed 43 species of medicinal plants largely, used by the natives in these districts. These plant species are used to cure various diseases/ailments as medicines in their day to day life. This plant wealth was conserved by the natives in different ways such as in their house compound/ kitchen gardens/ dooryards/ backyards as medicinal and ornamental plants. During the survey, it was observed that medicinal plants and related ethonbotanial information was declining very fast due to change in their life style, unawareness and lack of interest of new generation. The surveyed districts of North Bengal region, warrants conservation in order to preserve the medicinal plant wealth and related traditional health care system.

Abstract

The present articles pertains to edible wild fruits collected from U. P. Hills during the years 1982-1992. The U. P. Hills are situated in the centre of the Western Himalaya. The enumeration deals with the treatment of 67 families including 122 genera and 170 species. The important families represented by local wild fruits are Rosaceae (25), Moraceae (10), Cucurbitaceae (7), Rutaceae (6), Solanaceae (6), Berberidaceae (5), Anacardiaceae (4), Ehretiaceae (4), Elaeagnaceae (4), Euphorbiaceae (4) and Verbenaceae (4). Vernacular names, English names, important field characters, traditional uses by the natives, flowering and fruiting season, distribution and frequency, field numbers and nutritive evaluation for each taxon are presented.

Abstract

The present study was conducted on the performance and relative suitability of 14 different tree species planted on degraded sites in the premises of Tropical Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur (M.P.). The survival and growth observations recorded after 14½ years of planting showed that Albizia procera as the most suitable species with highest relative score. On the basis of relative suitability indices, plants were grouped into four categories. Species scoring highest number (75-100) were categorized under most suitable, while those with indices below 45 were considered not suitable for planting in these types of degraded soil.Albizia procera, Cassia siamea, Dalbergia latifolia, Dalberia sissoo and Tectona grandis were found to be most suitable. Azadirachta indica, Albizia lebbeck, Dendrocalamus stricus, Emblica officinalis, Pongamia pinnata and Sterculia urens were suitable, while Acacia catechu was less suitable and Acacia benthamii was unsuitable.
